Counseling and advisement resources are as diverse as our student population.

Whether you’re a new student with fewer than 15 units, an athlete, part of MESA, Canyons Promise, mpowerment Programs, or the Academic Accommodations Center — or you’re not in a special program and simply need general counseling to plan your classes — we’re here to help you map out your academic path with a counselor.

Academic Accommodations Center (AAC) Student

If you are a participating student with the Academic Accommodations Center (AAC), you may schedule an academic counseling appointment by contacting the AAC office. Express drop-in counseling with an AAC Counselor is also available and hours are listed on the AAC website.

Athlete

If you are a Student Athlete, it is best to meet with the Athletic Counselor to ensure all NCAA eligibility requirements are met. You can directly book a counseling appointment with the Athletic Counselor, Albert Loaiza (albert.loaiza@canyons.edu). You can also schedule the appointment by contacting the Athletic Program Specialist, Jasmine Hall at 661.362.3156 or Jasmine.Hall@canyons.edu.

If you are a participant in CalWORKS, you can directly book an academic counseling appointment through the CANVAS CalWorks site. Eligible CalWORKS' students are added to the CANVAS-CWKs and have a counseling link to book an appointment. If you do not have access to CalWORKS in Canvas, please connect with the CalWORKS Program.

Part of COC's Empowerment Program, CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids) is the states Welfare-to-Work program for families with children. The College of the Canyons CalWORKs Program works in partnership with the Department of Public Social Services to assist students with education, training, and job skills.

Canyons Promise Student

Current Year 1 and year 2 Promise students can find information on hours and links to book appointments in their Canyons Promise Canvas shell.  The Canvas shell also includes the weekly Express Drop-In schedule. Current or returning student not supported by a specialized program

If you are not part of a special program that has its own designated counselor, please use the Academic, Career, and Transfer Counseling Office services.

Counselors in the Counseling Office meet with students who are not affiliated with special population program and who have completed at least 15 units at College of the Canyons. The Counseling Office provides express drop-in services, 1-hour counseling appointments, and workshops. These services are available online, at the Valencia Campus, and at the Canyon Country Campus.

EOPS Student (Empowerment Program)

Part of COC's Empowerment Program, the Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) is a state funded program designed to go above and beyond other services offered on campus. EOPS is a student support program that provides academic and developmental services to students who face social and economic barriers.

MESA serves to enrich the experience of students majoring in math, science and engineering to support financially disadvantaged and/or historically underrepresented students by providing a variety of services including academic advisement, discipline specific enrichment and community building opportunities. New Incoming Prospective COC Student

You are new to COC without a COC Student ID number. You will need to apply to College of the Canyons to get started.

Have never taken a class at College of the Canyons before, and
Are not currently enrolled in high school.

If you took COC classes while you were in high school but haven’t taken any since graduating, you are still considered a new student.

If you have fewer than 15 units completed, your first stop will be with an Academic Advisor. Advisors specialize in helping new students start strong, explore resources, and understand their first steps at COC. When you reach 15 units, it’s time to meet with a counselor to build your full education plan.
