James "Chip" Chavez

James Chip Chavez graduated from William S. Hart High School in 1972. He enrolled at College of the Canyons in the fall of the same year. While at COC he earned First Team, All Conference and Honorable Mention, All State recognition as a kicker on the Cougar Football team. In 1973 he scored nine extra points in a game, which is still the school record. He graduated in 1974 and went on to United States International University, where he earned a bachelors degree in 1977. Chip served on the football feasibility committee in 1996, which recommended in 1997 that College of the Canyons bring back football. The football program was reinstated in 1998. Chip served as a member of the football coaching staff from the reinstatement of the program until 2009. Chip was the coach of the teams kickers. He mentored and coached three student athletes who were All Americans, three who achieved All State selections and 12 who were selected as All Conference players. Chip coached the kickers who help secure the National Championship title for College of the Canyons football in 2004. Chip was inducted into the College of the Canyons Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. Chip has been with Bank of America as a Vice President and Senior Investigator for over 32 years. He has 5 children, and 2 grandchildren. He and his wife Linda are both avid sports enthusiasts and strong supporters of Cougar Football. Chip has given over 10 years of volunteer service to College of the Canyons.
