Len Mohney

1974

Len Mohney retired from COC in 2016 with almost 40 years of service. His legacy has yielded him many memories, accomplishments and tangible accolades. But Len says, Its the students, friends and colleagues Ive met and had unforgettable experiences with that I cherish more than anything. To Len, College of the Canyons is all about the people.

Len enrolled at College of the Canyons (COC) in 1972 as a freshman student athlete. Upon graduation in 1974, he transferred to California State University, Northridge, where he received a bachelors degree in physical education. He later went to Azusa Pacific University earning his masters degree in physical education. While doing his undergraduate and graduate work, he coached baseball under the legendary Mike Gillespie at COC.

When Gillespie accepted the top job at the University of Southern California in 1986, Len became the head baseball coach at College of the Canyons . During his 14-year career as head coach, his teams competed for, and won numerous championship titles. Named Athletic Director in 1997, he became the administrator in charge of the colleges athletic expansion, which ushered in womens soccer and reinstated football in 1998. Likewise, he was at the helm when COC added womens golf, womens water polo, mens soccer and opened its state-of-the-art fitness center and the new East PE Building. Guiding his department during the athletic expansion is one of his proudest accomplishments.

In 2000, he retired as head baseball coach, accepting the position of Dean of Physical-Education and Kinesiology. The California Community College Baseball Coaches Association paid tribute to Lens legacy when it inducted him into its Hall of Fame. Coach Moans, an endearment given to him by his friends and student athletes has been happily married to his wife Cheri, who is an avid baseball fan. He said, We still love to watch the Cougars play baseball from the hill, that is if Im not fishing!
